Go bananas for Eevee
When popular souvenir snack TOKYO BANANA announced a collaboration with Nintendo’s Pokémon, fans all around the country got excited. The first spongy cakes that were released in 2020 featured the franchise’s most iconic character Pikachu. The first batches would be sold in 7-ELEVEN convenience stores all around the country before becoming a permanent staple as part of the POKÉMON TOKYO BANANA series at the Tokyo Station main store (ポケモン東京ばな奈トウキョウステーション). Because of its success, and undoubted deliciousness, the lineup got expanded to include the popular fox-like Eevee.

The Eevee Tokyo Banana has adorable Eevee prints and the sponge cake is said to be fluffier to mimic Eevee’s big tuft of fur. Similar to the Pikachu Tokyo Banana, Eevee got a slow limited release all over the country from 1st January and finally made its debut in the Kansai area on 30th January. After checking the local 7-ELEVEN for their official release, it was time to hunt for some delicious desserts.

There are six different wrappings and every pack contains two Eevee Tokyo Bananas. Pick your favourite from winking Eevee, curious Eevee, happy Eevee, surprised Eevee, smiling Eevee, and sad Eevee. While you can choose the illustration, the Eevee design on the bananas is a mystery until you open the individual wrappings. The package even mentions the possible appearance of the rare heart-shaped Eevee tail as one of the six designs.

Just a bite from these fluffy cakes reveals a generous filling of sweet banana custard that matches perfectly with the caramel macchiato-flavoured sponge outer layer. It’s definitely a more adult taste than the regular Tokyo Banana as the coffee notes are quite strong but not overpowering. The packaging suggests freezing the cakes to let the filling harden up like ice cream. Definitely check out your local 7-ELEVEN if you are in Japan to snatch a batch of these limited desserts.

The Eevee bananas will be available at 7-ELEVEN while stocks last. After that, you will have to make your way to JR Tokyo Station (東京駅 Tokyo-eki) to get your hands on some fluffy Eevee goodness, available in packs of two or eight. Maybe you’ll find the lucky heart-shaped tail.
